Dear Elected Official,

I am a member of the grassroots organization, Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM), and a windstorm insurance consumer in Monroe County.  We have been engaged in the debate about windstorm insurance since our premiums more than doubled two years ago.  We were temporarily satisfied with the outcome of the special legislative session on insurance in January 2007, but the time has come to make those gains permanent. 

Senator Atwater’s bill, SB 2860, is a good one – except that it prevents Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (CPIC) from offering wind-only policies.  Most of us have to carry windstorm insurance if we have a mortgage, and CPIC is the only company that offers it.  That means that my only choice for all my homeowners multi-peril insurance will be Citizens, even if it is more expensive or does not offer all the coverage I need.  Please fix this problem with SB 2860, and then pass the legislation, because there’s much in it that will be good for me, like extending the rate freeze for a year, limiting future increases to something I can live with, and repealing “use and file” statutes.

I am a voter and a tax-payer as well as an insured.  Please remember me, and the millions like me, when you are considering insurance reform this session.  In this economy, we can’t afford not to pass this pro-consumer legislation.
